Some of us were born back in the “olden days” when the choice of footwear was fairly limited. When we walked into a shoe shop back then, chances are we weren’t greeted with in excess of 100 pairs of joggers or sand shoes from which to choose.
For those born in the 50s, 60s, or even 70s, the choices were minimal and the displays needed only accommodate a handful of styles at any given time, whether they were fancy shoes for parties, school shoes, or any other type of footwear.
Today, the footwear craze means countless models on display in your neighborhood shoe shop, running store, or favorite department or discount store. Walk into any athletic clothing store and you’ll see walls filled with joggers designed by companies such as Adidas, Nike, Reebok, New Balance, Brooks, Puma, and many others.
Options For Footwear Displays
Displaying all of these items can be a shop fitter’s nightmare, but as long as you have the right tools, you can put forth a display that allows for easy browsing and – hopefully – buying. Acrylic is the most popular material used in footwear displays these days. This man-made material is durable, and shoe stands made of acrylic can offer a variety of display options.
Most shops will purchase a number of single stands that display just one shoe. These are slanted stands that generally display a shoe in a semi-upright position in such a way that all of the shoes features can be viewed, even without removing it from the stand.
These can be bent at a variety of angles – according to your choosing – and may include a toe wall to keep the shoe from slipping off or a piece of raised material on which you can hang the heel of the shoe (for high heels or other similar footwear).
You can also purchase such stands that will accommodate a pair of shoes rather than just a single shoe. Obviously, these are wider in scale but are otherwise similar to those that hold only one shoe. Any of these acrylic footwear displays can be purchased at varying heights and angles, which make for lovely cascading displays and offer a prettier visual picture in general.
Acrylic shoe stands that hold more than one pair of shoes are also available and can accommodate several different pairs or styles in one space. Like the single stands, these are available in different sizes and heights and can be slanted or level, according to your needs or wants. Any of these, and the aforementioned stands, can sit on tables, counters, or on top of any other display item.
Large stores with sizeable wall displays can also put acrylic pieces to good use. Many stores use hanging acrylic display shelves (attachable to pegboards, slatwalls, or similar) for use in displaying one shoe for all the styles available.
Often, for many of the most popular athletic stores, this number can top more than 100, sometimes 200 or more. These hanging stands are available in clear plastic, black, white, and – sometimes – a more vibrant color.
Furthermore, acrylic is very affordable.
